The root canal process begins by removing the dental pulp from within the infected tooth. Once the root canal system is cleared of its pulp, the cleaned space is filled with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha to protect the area from future infection. The crown of the tooth is then sealed with a filling. After a root canal, the tooth that was worked on generally becomes dry and brittle. A crown is usually required to protect the tooth and restore functionality.
