Albuquerque Root Canals

Most people associate root canals with the one of the most painful dental procedures a person can experience. With today’s modern medicine, that is no longer true. Over 14 million root canals are performed every year—and most of those procedures are painless or about as painful as having a cavity filled. Remember, root canal treatments don’t cause pain, they relieve pain.

A root canal is a way to save a tooth that has become inflamed or infected on the inside by removing the damaged tissue, and then filling and sealing the remaining space to prevent bacteria from reentering the tooth. The space inside each tooth is referred to as the root canal system. The root canal system is filled with dental “pulp” or soft tissue, which consists of nerves and blood vessels that help the tooth develop; the pulp is responsible for keeping each tooth hydrated. When dental pulp becomes infected, a root canal is necessary to prevent pain and save the tooth.

The root canal process begins by removing the dental pulp from within the infected tooth. Once the root canal system is cleared of its pulp, the cleaned space is filled with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha to protect the area from future infection. The crown of the tooth is then sealed with a filling. After a root canal, the tooth that was worked on generally becomes dry and brittle. A crown is usually required to protect the tooth and restore functionality.

If you have an infected tooth that is causing you pain, it is important to be evaluated by an experienced dentist as soon as possible. Failure to properly care for an infected tooth may develop into a painful bone infection in your jaw or cause you to lose your tooth.
